THORNLEIGH
Thornleigh is an established area with substantial industrial land use in the central section, based around Chilvers Road, Sefton Road and Duffy Avenue. Thornleigh is bounded by Waitara Creek in the north, the suburb of Normanhurst and the Lane Cove River in the east, the suburb of Pennant Hills in the south and Quarter Sessions Road, Duffy Avenue and the suburb of Westleigh in the west. Thornleigh is named after Chief Constable John Thorn, an early land holder.
Settlement of the area dates from 1838 when the first land grant was made. Growth was minimal until the 1880s, following the opening of the railway line. Significant development occurred in the post-war period. The population has increased since the mid 1990s, a result of new dwellings being added to the area.
Major features of the area include Parkway Plaza, Marjorie Headen Lookout, Brickyard Park, Headen Park, Oakleigh Park, Pennant Hills Park, Thornleigh Indoor Sports Centre and two schools.
